Isn't It Romantic

While I was not exactly planning any special dinner for Valentine's Day this year, I could not resist setting a pretty table for the occasion.

Besides...I really just wanted to use my new tablecloth.  You see...I've been admiring this certain fabric at Hobby Lobby for some time now.  I'd go so far to say it is spectacular!  A natural linen-type background and covered with a large shiny silver metallic floral print, this is considered home dec fabric.

And while if would make an awesome chair, or over-the-top draperies, I simply bought a few yards to make a table covering.  For those of you who favor gold over silver, it also comes in metallic gold.  My next lucky find were these darling paper roses from West Elm.  I oooohed and aaaahed over their collection of faux snow drops, quince and roses...each one cuter than the next.  While they came in many colors, I chose these pale, pale pink ones.

Simply set into a chunky mercury glass vase (also from West Elm), they are as lovely as the real thing!  

(And long lasting to boot.)  I just might have to go back for some more.  Mercury glass tealights add a bit of romance.

The rest of my tablescape fell easily into place.  Naturally, I chose to use my silver chargers,

topped with my favorite plain white plates.  I think everyone should have a set of natural linen napkins. Wishing to do something a bit different with them, I found instructions to make these playful napkin roses.

They were really very easy, and just the touch I was looking for.  Because everything on the table is so neutral, I needed to add a splash of color...

...so I chose my Romantika (how appropriate) goblets and water glasses...vintage Crate & Barrel.  I dug out a few treasures to add some happy memories to my Valentine's table.

My dear Aunt Tess had several pieces of Dorothy Thorpe glassware, like this footed candy dish.  I also found this antique silver bottle holder,

because heaven forbid any wine drips on the tablecloth!  Such pretty details...

Now that my Valentine's Day tablescape is complete, I think I might just have to plan a special dinner after all...

Swept Away, the Fair Trade Way

One of the many duties of a volunteer at Ten Thousand Villages is unpacking merchandise.  If you are particularly lucky, your volunteer day coincides with the shipment of that month's new merchandise.  For me, this event is analogous to opening birthday presents...lots and lots and lots of birthday presents. Each box, packed tightly with shredded paper, contains another surprise. One item is prettier than the next...and this event goes on for hours.  Well, the February New Items arrived recently, and I was immediately swept away to another place...

...a warm, tropical, dreamy place...colors of beach glass and the seaside.  I could not wait to give you a sneak peek at some of these gorgeous pieces.  Three new tablecloths are part of the new collection, and I chose to feature this beautiful Lake Dreams tablecloth.

Handmade in India, the cloth is printed overall in shades of pale lime green, blues and grey.  Also available are matching napkins.  

I've tucked them into these darling mother of pearl napkin rings, an item previously available at Ten Thousand Villages. 

To show these linens off...

...I paired them with some of my own dishes and placemats.  I was very excited to see these new Highlands goblets.

Made in Cochabamba Bolivia from recycled glass, they are the perfect size and shape for water, wine, iced tea or just about any beverage.  

The matching Highlands carafe is equally lovely and very versatile.  Crafting beauty from reused material is again demonstrated in these tiny bud vases.  

 

Cleverly named Blossom, Posy and Petal, these vases can be used time and time again as recycled glass looks fabulous in so many settings.

I think they would make the perfect party favor for your luncheon guests!  My favorite item in the new collection has to be this Evening Lights candleholder.  

Made in India from shesham wood, it has a charming whitewash finish and holds 5 tea lights...

...a perfect centerpiece that reminds me of driftwood and puts me in a beach mood.  Who wouldn't love these adorable little...

...blue, green and aqua ceramic songbirds, carefully made by artisans from Chulucanas, Peru.  I've perched them all around my tablescape.  For a final touch,

I wove this garland of jute dragonflies throughout my setting.  Made in Viet Nam,

A Bad Case of Spring Fever

Green and White and Red All Over

What's green and white and red all over??  Why, the perfect Christmas tablescape, of course.  I'm just a teensy bit behind in my holiday preparations, but looking at this fun and festive table makes me smile. Somehow, everything will get done in time...I just need to relax and not take things too seriously.  Like this setting...nothing serious about it!

I started off with a simple table cloth made of Marimekko fabric (always available at the Crate & Barrel for a ridiculously fabulous price).  With its giant burgundy, green and white dots on a bright red background, this cloth is just plain fun.  Time to stack...

I chose my white lacy paper placemats (also from the Crate) and

some shiny red chargers with my favorite plain white plates and

some playful red and white polka dot napkins (Pottery Barn) and

another little white plate and

finally my flatware, neatly tucked into a little red stocking trimmed with green baubles.  Beverages will be sipped from these festive glasses...

...a big chunky red water goblet and a deep green wine glass.  In lieu of a floral centerpiece, I opted for some playful holiday decorations.  From my rather vast collection of snowmen, I chose these handmade glass snow people...

The (Ugly) Truth About Acorns

You've probably seen them...the packages of half-faux acorns from Pottery Barn...the perfect little autumn decoration.  Fill a jar, scatter across the table.  But at $14, I thought they were a bit pricey,

especially when the real thing is lying on the ground for the taking (as long as you beat the squirrels to them).  So on one of my walks, I filled my pockets with the nicest acorns I could find.  I was quite enamored with my collection...until several days later when (gasp!)...I discovered white worms crawling out of my pretty little acorns!!  Talk about unwanted house guests.  Thank goodness they were not on my dinner table!  So as you can imagine, I look at these pest-free acorns from Pottery Barn in a totally new light. They are worth every penny!  Nonetheless, the acorns are the inspiration for today's autumn tablescape.  If you need desire fresh, inexpensive and seasonal table linens, march right over the Home Goods.

That's where I found this lovely rust and floral Ralph Lauren tablecloth.  Instead of a runner, I dressed up the middle of this table with this charming burlap striped ribbon from Hobby Lobby.

They really had an interesting collection of natural fiber ribbons of various width.  All you need is a little imagination.  And while I normally don't feel the need to match my napkins, I couldn't pass these up.  So they would not get lost on the cloth,

I turned them into a pretty little raffia-wrapped bundle and set them atop my plain white plates.  These plain white plates were in turn set atop my favorite navy blue plates

(The Blues by Arabia of Finland).  And because I love to layer, I added simple jute mats...

...they really help the blue plates to stand out.  I know I've been using them a lot lately, but tis the season, so here are my gorgeous

brown Lenox wine and water goblets.  Oh...I just remembered these chunky acorn candle pots.

I've had them for years, Crate & Barrel, I believe.  A Fall tabletop is so easy to accessorize.  The more the merrier.  I'm so glad these cute corn husk flowers from...

...(Serenade in Wheaton) get to come to the party again.  Of course, a bit of candlelight is in order, especially since it's dark at 4:30!  I chose these shiny mercury glass tea lights and nestled them here and there, and also these antique Chinese brass candle sticks.

These were always on display in my parent's home for as long as I can remember!  What a nice memory to bring them out again.  And last, but not least (they are the star of the story today)
